We normally think of wine as a drink to savor on its own. However, wines make the base of many great mixed drinks; here is a short list of some of my favorites:

  • Kir Royale: Champagne and Framboise. It's a sweet, pink, valentine's kind of drink, meant to share. Take a sip along with your dessert.

  • Mimosa: I know, it's nothing new or exciting, but if you are look for a little bubble in breakfast, this orange juice and champagne mixture will certainly put a sparkle in your morning.

  • Italian Kisses: Champagne, Disaronno and Grenadine. This is an interesting twist on a champagne cocktail. Even if you're not a big fan of amaretto, Disaronno has a very subtle flavor that the champagne blends nicely with.

  • Sangria: While not a mixed drink per se, a deep red wine mixed with your choice of fruit juices always offers something unique to the palate. Try it with your favorite Mexican dish, or chilled at your summer picnic.

  • Mulled Wine: Again, not completely a mixed drink, but on a cold night nothing beats mulled wine. Just take a strong red and mix a few spices in (cinnamon, orange peel, cloves, sugar, honey or whatever you like) and a little brandy. This drink will keep you warm all night.

  • Wine Spritzer: Simple, take your favorite white wine and add club soda or mineral water (or sprite if you're short handed). It's simple, pleasant and goes well with most everything.

  • Poinsettia: A fun holiday drink. Take champagne, cranberry juice and a little cointreau to make your season festive.
What are some of your favorite drinks with wine?
